Octo Otto is a retro 8-bit arcade style game that takes inspiration from Pac Man.

In the game, you play as Octo Otto. Your goal is to eat all of the shrimp that are in the level, whilst avoiding hungry piranha-like enemies called Rannas. You can avoid Rannas from chasing you by staying out of their vision.

The game isn't fully complete yet. There are a few more levels, mechanics, objects, and enemies i want to add, as well as a bit of polishing.

Controls:

Move with Arrow keys or WASD. You can shoot ink from behind with SPACE to slow down Rannas if one chases you.  The ink can only slow them down, not defeat them.

Pressing Shift + T will let you return to the title screen at any time.

Shrimp:

If you eat enough shrimp in a row within 10 seconds (time refreshes whenever you eat shrimp), the rank of the shrimp will increase and will then change color and give you more points when eating them. The highest rank of Shrimp is 4.

Rank 1: 10 points,   Rank 2: 20 points,   Rank 3: 30 points,   Rank 4: 40 points.

If you let 10 seconds pass without eating shrimp the rank will go back down to 1.

Super Clams:

Eating a Super Clam will power you up for 10 seconds. When powered up, you can launch and defeat Rannas. However, launching a Ranna will remove you power.

Pro tip: If you launch a Ranna into another Ranna, that Ranna will also be launched. Defeating a Ranna will earn you 150 points. But if you combo the Rannas with launching, the defeated Rannas will earn you 300, 450, 600, and so on.

Rannas:

There are 3 types of Rannas: Blue, yellow, and red. Blue is the slowest, yellow is medium speed, red is the fastest, and also much more resistant to ink.

Levels:

There are 6 levels. Clearing all 6 will loop you back to level 1. But when it loops back, the game will speed up .

Let's see how high of a score you can set!

Warning, reloading the page will reset the high score. This shouldn't be a problem when the game is finalized though.

Really fun little game, I didnt think i'd be playing this for as long as I did.

First of all the graphics are cute, the tune is chipper, the fact that there is more makes it less repetitive, the ink spewing to hold enemies back, and the fact that your ink meter is your own saturation is amazing imo, neat little detail.

The fact that multiple colored and styled walls are used makes the navigation easier.

The power-up only killing one fish is a bit meh, I did miss a rampage where i could just headbutt all the fishes, but the fact that you can play basically bowling with the fishes, by hitting one into another kinda makes up for it.

But I do think that the game is a bit bland. Every level is basically the same. Eat shrimpos (the chaining mechanic is nice) and kill fishes. I would have liked to see  different powerups per level (where you shoot something else than ink or gives you different abilities , different enemies, or just really anything that gives you a reason to play. Currently, once you played the first level you saw everything that the game has to offer.

But these added things most probably detract from the type of old school arcade game feel that you are going for, and made really well!

Thank you for playing! There is definitely room for improvement, as the levels are a bit bland. But there will be mechanics in the full version to make it more flavorful.

I have been thinking of adding things like teleporters or stationary enemies that block your way. And maybe even more than that!
